January 16th, 2016 -- The Combined Colleges and Campuses (CCC) Marooners delivered their best performance of the NAGICO Super 50 Tournament in stunning fashion, humiliating Zone B leaders Windward Volcanoes by a massive 91 runs. Spectators at the Warner Park in Basseterre St. Kitts were left shell-shocked at the dismal display of the Volcanoes team that have been pretty good all tournament and were unbeaten until that match. Setting 157 all out, the Marooners were on a rampage and took the first three wickets for just 17 runs. Andre Fletcher bit the dust early with just 3 runs after being bowled by Ryan Hinds, Johnson Charles didn’t last long and only made 10 runs and Miles Bascombe fell victim to a runout from the bowling of eventual Man of the Match Chemar Holder for 0. It became clear to cricket spectators, this game would be over way ahead of time.
The onslaught continued with Tyrone Theophile gone for just 1, Sunil Ambris who was instrumental in helping the Volcanoes in their last win against the Guyana Jaguars went for just 8, as well as Captain Liam Sebastian who was bowled by Holder for the same score. The performance from the Volcanoes was abysmal and baffling considering they pulled off two close wins in their last two matches and needed to win this match to top the group and assure their spot in the semi-finals slated for Trinidad and Tobago. Now, as good as they have been all tournament, they may end up on the outside looking in if the Marooners earn a victory against the Jaguars on Sunday and if they lose to the Leeward Island Hurricanes.
Man of the Match Chemar Holder picked up five wickets for 22 runs. He felt the team came together with a mindset to win the match and was quite pleased with the performance. “Today everybody focused and did what they had to do…to win the game,” young Holder said after the match. He is of the view that the team can pull off a similar performance on Sunday when they play the Guyana Jaguars at the St. Pauls Recreational Grounds.
As for the Volcanoes, Coach Ian Allen said his team didn’t bat well. He knows very well that the Volcanoes can run the risk of not making the semi-final even though they are leading the pack. “Leewards are not doing too well in the tournament but still you can’t take anything for granted,” Coach Allen said of their next opponents on Sunday slated for the Warner Park. He is not of the view that his team took the Marooners lightly as some might think. He said his middle order batsmen did not build any partnerships and as such this placed a lot of pressure on the tail-end batsmen. “I think we always remained focused the way we went out and bowled and limiting CCC under a total but we obviously were confident that we would get it,” Allen explained.
