Robbed US tourists notify embassies: host recounts the ordeal As told to …..SAVE SKN Group

By: Pauline Ngunjiri, Press Release

Nevis, January 31st, 2016 -- US tourists, Veronica and Aaron Janachovsky, who were robbed US$3,000 by three armed, masked gunmen at a cottage on the island of Nevis a week ago, have since briefed the US embassy in Barbados, the St. Kitts and Nevis embassy, New York and the relevant local government minister.

During the course of the event, two of the robbers identified themselves but that may have been a red herring. The two names were well known to all the police officers present.

On the night the armed robbers invaded the cottage, said the host, they were on the bed talking about what a wonderful time they had had on the island and the wonderful people they had met. “They were definitely making Nevis the place they want to come to.  They were such a wonderful couple,” said the host.

The host learnt her guests had been robbed after the armed robbers left the bedroom.  They did not untie the husband until they were off the property.  When Veronica untied her husband, the couple walked to their host’s residence.  “They came up on my porch, banging on my doors and windows.  That has happened in the past when guests have lost their keys. It scared me when I heard this noise.  I heard them call my name. So I got up opened the door when they told me what had happened.”

The host called the police. It took them about twenty minutes to come. Four policemen came. Three policemen went to the cottage while one of the policemen stayed with us because Veronica was too scared.  She believed the gunmen would come back and kill them.

Veronica was hysterical, talking about all that had happened. She was talking to herself and she said, ‘the thieves introduced themselves’.

She said, the robbers did not have gloves.  The shot man was the leader. And he was using indecent language.

“They were in the bedroom.  The wife heard a sound.  All the lights were off.  She got up.  Somebody was banging the bedroom door. The bedroom door was swung open and there were three men. They were masked men, dressed all in black. Her husband was asleep. She started screaming her head off and that awakened him. She felt that they were two but it was dark. With guns pointed, they demanded money. They gave them all of their money. The thieves went through all of their bags, all of their luggage and they looked all around their room. They had two smart phones.  They took the smart phones.

At that point, Veronica, a Jehovah’s Witness began praying out loud for them and for her.  One of them was being rude, telling him to shut up.  When the money was given to them, one of them took the money to the bedroom.  He was counting the money and putting it in piles.  When he counted the money, he walked out.

The host explained further, “I assumed he did that because she had screamed. At some point, they left momentarily.  She said the short guy was really nasty mouthed. The one who was demanding everything and bossing the other two guys.  He was short, the other guy was tall.  The short one kept saying, we know you have more money. The guests told them, we have given you everything we have.  The short one said, “ I am going to have your wife.”  At that point, the tall one said, let’s get out of here.  The small one felt her up (attempted to sexually molest her). Putting his hands all over her. They left the room again. They came back and again demanded money.  Veronica again said, “We have given you all the money” That is when he took a small TV in the room.

“As they were leaving, the little one said, do not call the police.  Do not untie him.  We are out of here.  He said, ‘If you call the police, we will come and kill you tomorrow’  She believed with all her heart, he would kill her.  When he was touching her, he was holding a gun at her head.  He cocked it a couple of times.  She said, he had the distinctive pleasure of wanting to shoot someone.”

According to their unidentified host, Aaron and Veronica spent a lot of time researching the Caribbean.  Nevis sounded just perfect for them.  They had always gone for their vacations to Hawaii and they loved Nevis so much.

“As long as I have been here, there has always been theft.  When we arrived on the island, the theft was so minor.  Some guests called me because a chicken had been stolen out of their oven.  Crime has been escalating.  My fear was that somebody might come with a machete some years back.  Now we have guns, machetes and physical assault.  There is a violence”, the host said.

“It is very hard for me to tell these people what a nice place Nevis is. I feel that I did not tell this people enough. I did say, Nevis is a beautiful place but when you go to the beach, watch your belongings. When you go to bed, be sure you lock off your doors.  When you go out during the day, lock off everything.  I did not go further than that and I am feeling so guilty now. I was not going to say to them, oh we have had this robbery. I do not want to frighten everyone.”
