BHS, Ivor Walters Primary shine at Bottling Company Art Competition

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWELVE of the Federation’s learning institutions brought their A-game to the St. Kitts Bottling Company’s ‘Unlocking the Creativity in Me’ Schools Art Competition and Basseterre High and the Ivor Walters Primary Schools emerged at the top of the list with their impressive pieces.

The competition, the second to be hosted by the Bottling Company, required the participants to create artistic pieces with predominant use of the company’s products.

The creations were on display late last week at Independence Square where they were presented to a panel of three judges.

The pieces ranged from chandeliers to dresses to theme parks and ponds.

In the Primary School category, Charlestown, Irishtown and Ivor Walters Primary Schools captured third, second and first place respectively. Out of a possible 60-point, they amassed 45.67, 46.67 and 53 points respectively.

Basseterre High was adjudged winner of the High School category with a total of 56 points while Charles E. Mills Secondary placed second with 47.67 points and in third place was Nevis International Secondary School with 47.3 points.

    The Theme Park

With the help of one of his teachers and two of his friends, D’Jorn Dias of BHS created an impressive piece which he named the “Castle of Creativity”.

It is a theme park that features a Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round and some little people carved out of plastic bottles. Parts of the theme park were in motion and according to the BHS competitor the movement came from old recycled motors.

The 16-year-old fourth former told SKNVibes that he was happy to have won the competition but admitted that he never doubted that he would. With only two days to put the project together, Dias said it could have been much better if he had known of the competition earlier.

He said the project is more than meets the eye, explaining that it mirrors the psychological condition where some people’s creativity is blocked or locked up by their fears.

“The castle shows people’s creativity being blocked by walls of fear and they are afraid to express. But seeing that the theme is unlocking the creativity in me, the front is about the lock. There is a locking mechanism in front which opens the park. It is showing that when people overcome their fears their creativity is revealed.”

    The Tropical Sparkle Park

Chassidy Kelly of Ivor Walters Primary School said her piece was inspired by her love for nature and animals. Dubbed the Tropical Sparkle Park, it features the bottles, bottle caps and labels of the Bottling Company products.

The sixth grader used them to creatively display a pond with frogs, water lilies, palm trees, a peacock and even a table and people, which represent a park sitting just at the side of the pond.

Her first time entering the competition, Kelly said she got assistance from her friends, teachers and mother, and she is happy for the victory.
