Announcement on the distribution of habitat 30 homes expected shortly, says Minister Hamilton

Minister of Human Settlement, Lands and Co-operatives et al

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 02, 2016 (SKNIS): The Government of National Unity is expected to make an announcement on the distribution of homes that were built under the Habitat 30 Housing Scheme shortly.

A caller to the Government’s radio and television programme on January 27 requested information on the distribution of houses that had been already completed under the Habitat 30 scheme.

Speaking to the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service on January 28, Minister with responsibility for Human Settlement, the Honourable Eugene Hamilton, said that he is aware that there are concerns about the distribution.

Minister Hamilton said that “at the moment, there are some houses that have been completed under what was called the Habitat 30. Some are in Halfway Tree, some in Lodge—the overall number when they began was somewhere in the vicinity of 162. They have been completed. In fact, they have been completed for a while now and persons have been asking, “why you all don’t distribute these houses?”

The Minister of Human Settlement explained that the delay is as a result of the mismanagement of the construction process by the Douglas- led administration.

“The truth is,” said Minister Hamilton, “the construction work that was undertaken was not properly conducted by the previous administration. We anticipated or at least I anticipated that the houses would be finished at somewhere around $100,000 per house. Some of those houses were finished at a cost of $140,000 which put them outside of the category of what we call low income houses.”

The minister explained that he had appealed to Cabinet and summited a proposal to address the matter. He said that “Cabinet will make the decision very shortly and we will announce to the country about how the distribution will go.”
