Governor Antoine focuses on key messages to better serve the region

By: SKNIS, Press Release
Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 04, 2016 (SKNIS): In order to effectively and efficiently serve countries within the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU), Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), Timothy Antoine, spelt out his priorities on Monday, February 01, that would better assist the bank in serving the region.

Governor Antoine reminded the bank’s management and staff that they have a duty to serve the public.

“We are public servants and we must never take our position for granted,” he said. “We must never take the Central Bank for granted, as we are accountable to the people of this region and I wanted to affirm that as the chief public servant of this bank that we are committed to serve.”

He noted that this is an era of enormous challenges and the Central Bank is called upon to lead the pursuit of structural transformation across the region.

“I recognize that the bank has worked hard, the bank has done a lot of good work but I also recognize that the times require us to do more and to rise to the challenges of the day and so I challenge my colleagues to step up,” he said.

Governor Antoine stated that the bank’s “call is noble and urgent”, however, it must be done through collective action within the bank and across the currency union. He noted that this point of collective action is something the region would hear often from the bank and from him throughout his tenure at the bank.

“We cannot do it alone, we need each other and we need to work together,” said the Governor. “We must do for ourselves what only we can do for ourselves. In other words, it is very apparent to me that there are some things that this region must do that require no one to tell us what we ought to do and we ought not to wait on anyone to do what we must do.”

He said that there needs to be a sense of urgency about how the bank goes about addressing the issues of the day.
