Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 04, 2016 (SKNIS) -- A National Season of Prayer, Fasting and Repentance launches on Sunday, February 07, 2016, at 5:00 pm on the Grounds of St. George’s Anglican Church under the theme “Righteousness Exalteth a Nation…” taken from the Book of Proverbs 14:34.
The St. Kitts Christian Council and the Evangelical Association have organized this period of prayer, fasting and repentance from February 07 to March 19 to invite citizens to righteousness of life.
The National Season of Prayer, Fasting and Repentance will launch with a Prayer Rally on Sunday, February 07 at 5:00 pm on the Grounds of St. George's Anglican Church. On Wednesday, February 10, which is Ash Wednesday (Beginning of Lenten Season), there is a Worship and Prayer Service at 12:00pm in Independence Square, Basseterre. Monday, February 15 is declared as National Day of Repentance which includes several events, namely, General Assembly in Schools starting at 8:30 am; prayer in churches throughout the day; prayer services in the media; and ending with a National Service of Repentance at 7:00 pm at the Zion Moravian Church.
Several Community Prayer Services are also planned for 4: 00pm and will be coordinated by churches in the communities with attendance of the national church community: February 21, St. Maynard’s Park, Cayon); February 28, Independence Square, Basseterre; March 06, Sandy Point Grounds; March 13, Patsy Allers Playing Field, Basseterre.
The services continue with a Service of Praise, Prayer and Thanksgiving on Thursday February 18 at 7:00 pm on the Bay Road, Basseterre.
Sunday, March 20, is Palm Sunday, and there will be a Palm Sunday March of Witness at 8:00 am at the Circus, Basseterre.
Lenten Midday Services will also be held at the Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral from 11:50 am-12:30 pm under the theme “Love Your Neighbour as Yourself” on February 17 and 24 and March 02, 09, and 16.
To culminate the National Season of Prayer, Fasting and Repentance there will be Prayer Ministry to Essential Services and Institutions such as the Parliament/Cabinet, the Fire and Rescue Services, teachers, the police, nurses and the business community from March 14-18.
Archdeacon Emeritus of the St. George’s Anglican Church and Vice Chairman of the St. Kitts Christian Council said that the church has a crucial role to play in forming the consciences of people to live righteously with each other.
“The church has to be promoting peace. Peace is not just the absence of war and strife but the practice of justice. As people in society, we must be promoters of peace and harmonious relationships,” said Archdeacon Emeritus Hodge.
In his New Year’s Day address, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris said it was his “intention to consult with our religious leaders through the Minister of Ecclesiastical Affairs, the Hon Vance Amory, to convene a week of prayer early in this New Year,” adding that “we are mindful that we need God's guidance and protection as we embark on this New Year, and that holding fast to our spiritual and moral values is an imperative for taking us forward and upward.”
