By: Tucker-Clarke Primary, Press Release

February 5th, 2016 -- For the first time ever, the Tucker Clarke Primary School hosted ‘Literacy Week’ from the 25TH -29TH Janauary 2016.  The week was organized to further heighten awareness of the importance of literacy. The theme used to mark this auspicious occasion was ‘Reaching for Supremacy through Literacy’. A number of exciting activities were organized to promote the week.

On Monday 25th January the week was declared open by the school’s Education Officer Mrs. Edmeade. Additionally, a special program was planned after assembly to highlight various aspects of literacy. Poems, skits and storytelling were some of the spectacular performances presented by both teachers and students. The guest speaker for the mornings exercise was Mrs. Dorothy Clarke former head teacher of the prestigious institution. She took the opportunity in her presentation to remind pupils of the benefits of literacy and how it can be used to enrich their lives.

Tuesday 26th January saw double events, Character Day and Story Telling. The school day opened with an explosion of colourful costumes worn by the students. The eye popping displays at the school drew many spectators. It was a morning of splendour as the students were dressed in colourful attires of their favourite story characters, such as Cinderella, Elsa, Spiderman, The Gingerbread Boy and Splash. The galour continued throughout the day as parents and guardians came to the school to witness the event.

The second event of the day saw the arrival of persons from the community, who came in to read stories to the students on their classes. After reading the stories to the students, the books were left with the classes. Students enjoyed the interesting and stimulating stories.

The highly anticipated 'Open Day Exhibition' took place on Wednesday 28 January, 2016. Excitement filled the air as the hall at the school was transformed in preparation for teachers to display their created teaching aid for students to demonstrate their use. This activity captivated the full interest of all attendees as our students with the assistance and support of teachers skillfully demonstrated their creativity for our visiting judges’ approval. A wide selection of pupils’ work were also on display in various areas of literacy.

In addition, the exhibition was celebrated in a colourful display of bright orange as all of the students and teachers t-shirt were symbolically decorated with this vibrant colour which signifies literacy . Indeed, this created not merely a beautiful atmosphere with happy students but set the tone for an amazingly, wonderful day which included tag day activities which saw the most decorated students winning a prize.

The following day, an exhilarating elocution contest was held. The objective of the elocution competition was to develop the skill of clear and expressive speech, especially of distinct pronunciation and articulation. Those in attendance were not disappointed as the students’ performances were of a very high standard, which demonstrated continued development of communicational skills, confidence and a love of the spoken and written word.

A read- a –thon also formed part of the packed but meaningful week, exposed students to a variety of reading material which helped to  enrich their vocabulary and fluency. To further create excitement about this activity, students were constantly reminded of the lavish prizes that were in store for their efforts.

On Friday 29th January the week culminated with a literacy march of grandeur. Teachers, parents and pupils marched through the streets of the community in a kaleidoscope of colour.  Some students were dressed in their literacy week orange coloured t-shirts, while others wore their costumes of their favourite story character. Everyone marched rhythmically to the sounds of the marching band. Chants relating to literacy were also echoed as students displayed plaque cards and a variety of books to promote literacy.

Chairperson of the school’s improvement plan committee, Sherema Collins would like to express thanks to staff, individuals and corporate organizations for their generous support and contributions in making the week a remarkable success.
