Department of Youth in St. Kitts and Nevis hosts staff retreat

By: Department of Youth, Press Release

(BASSETERRE; St. Kitts) -- Members of the Department of Youth Empowerment in St. Kitts and the Division of Youth in Nevis, came together for a Staff Retreat on Wednesday, January 27.

The retreat was held at the Sweet Lime Restaurant at Ma Pau, where two interactive and informative sessions were held.

The first session was facilitated by Special Advisor to the Minister of Youth Empowerment in St. Kitts, Vernon Connor. His presentation provided information on the physical and emotional development in females, equipping the staff with the necessary knowledge to tackle challenges confronted by the feminine sex.

Connor was then followed by Human Resource Management Head Officer, Torfrida Rochester, who along with Olleen Knight-Warner made a presentation on the benefits of working for the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Human Resource officials outlined the perks which included health benefits, training opportunities, scholarships, paid study leave and retirement benefits.

The retreat also came in light of the exiting of the Director of Youth Empowerment, Geofrrey Hanley who will be transferred to the Bronte Welsh Primary School in the coming weeks.

Hanley, who was the longest serving youth director in the region, thanked his staff for their support over the years. He challenged the staff to remain focused as they work as one team to achieve one goal.

“Our programmes must be youth oriented and youth involved and youth focused. We serve the largest segment of our population… our youth,” he said.

“As I exit the youth department, I will never depart from youth development, my passion still continues. Staff I urge you to never give up on your dreams both personally and professionally. Even when some youth go down the wrong road, I urge you to try something different, you just might reach them this time around,” he said.

Minister with responsibility for Youth Empowerment and Deputy Prime Minister, Shawn Richards, reinforced his government’s interest in the young people in society. He also expressed gratitude to the staff for their hard work over the years and for organizing the retreat which included the Nevis staff.

“I want to encourage the two offices to work together, because what happens to youth in St. Kitts also affects Nevis and vice versa,” he said.

The minister applauded Hanley for his work over the years and reiterated Hanley’s sentiments that he would still be involved with young people.

The retreat ended on a high note as the staffers journeyed to the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park and the St. Kitts Eco-Park for an afternoon of relaxation.
