Prime Minister Harris challenges police officers to strive for excellence

Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 08, 2016 (SKNIS):  Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, is urging the police to do their job to the best of their ability at all times.

Delivering remarks at the Nevis Division Annual Constables Awards Ceremony in Charlestown on February 6, 2016, Prime Minister Harris said “the plaques and proclamations that the honourees will receive will only symbolize the great triumphs that you have so far experienced in this noble profession as Police Officers,” further explaining that, “they are a token of the collective enthusiasm for the dedicated self-sacrifice and desire that you have shown to make the communities in Nevis, and by extension, the entire Federation, a better place in which to live and work—simply a place in which we can all be proud of.”

Using a motivational quote from Author Jillian Michaels, Prime Minister Harris said “It's not about being perfect. It's about effort. And when you bring that effort every single day, that's where transformation happens. That's how change occurs.” He said that each honouree has been chosen as a result of his or her continued effort.

Commending the honourees, Dr Harris said that with “the challenges that we face in our communities today, and specifically the unacceptably high rate of violent crimes, the country needs dedicated police officers. Not just police constables, but dedicated officers at all ranks of the Police Force. You are to be commended, rightfully honoured and thanked for your efforts.”

The Federation’s Prime Minister admonished the officers to continue to strive for excellence, noting that “too often, there is considerable effort displayed until one is promoted or rewarded. Then the initial promise disappears.”

He therefore challenged the honourees to “demonstrate professionalism at all times, embody patience even under the most trying of circumstances, even when some of your colleagues would have walked away, demonstrate humanity toward people who some might say deserve none, show dedication to duty, even when called upon to assist, even when normally you should be on scheduled leave and to familiarize yourselves with and apply the Peelian Principles of ethical policing.”
