Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 08, 2016 (SKNIS): Police Constable Antonio Brown of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), Nevis Division, was named Constable of the Year in 2015 for the second time, with the first being in 2010.
PC Brown, who was awarded the top prize from a field of nine officers from various units, expressed how he felt about his award.
“I am delighted and greatly humbled knowing this is the second time around getting such prestigious award in the Nevis Division,” said Constable Brown. “I feel like I am a positive role model in the community and I wish that the young people can emulate such positiveness.”
The police constable explained what motivates him to do his job well.
“When I serve as a police officer, it motivates me to know as a member of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police force that I can do many positive things for the people in society despite the pay,” he said, while adding that when he is on duty he is proud to know that he can assist others. "It gladdens me to know that I have helped someone". I serve diligently and I am self-motivated because I love the job of being a police officer. As a police officer, when dealing with the public it is important to be professional as it is an image of what the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police force produces.”
He stated that a number of qualities puts him to the top of his game such as his love for the job and his religious background. He explained that when dealing with the public, officers should show the fruits of the spirit which include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, genteelness and self-control.
The constable shed some light on what he think is needed to help curb the crime situation in the Federation.
“There are many things that can be done to combat crime in the Federation,” he stated. “I may not have a quarter of the answers because crime will always be a part of any society not only in St. Kitts and Nevis but all over the world. What I can say is this, that the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force cannot prevent or detect all the crimes on our own. We need the help of the community, but in order to get the community’s support, we as police officers must first build a relationship with the community in other to obtain the support from members in society. With their assistance, we the police can achieve more on fighting crime in this Federation.”
Constable Brown offered words of encouragement to his fellow officers, encouraging them to be disciplined officers so that the community can look up to them and have confidence in the RSCNPF. He also encouraged them to not dwell on negative things that may be said about the organization in which they serve, but instead take the negatives and see how best they can work around them in order to improve the RSCNPF.
He expressed sincere thanks to a number of persons who played an integral role in him being selected for the award. Such persons include Corporal Carty for having the confidence in and nominating him for the award, as well as Inspector Hector, Inspector Bertie and Sergeant Stephens. He also thanked the Divisional Commander, Superintendent Brandy, for always encouraging him to be an outstanding officer. He equally thanked former Assistant Commissioner of Police, Robert Liburd, who has been instrumental for the high passing rate with the promotion exams in the Nevis Division.
“I must say thanks to the Police Strategic Planning Group and the Nevis Island Administration for their continued support for making this ceremony possible. I am thankful for the recognition of our hard work,” he said.
