(EMU) St. Kitts, January, 14, 2016 – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Hon. Shawn Richards is emphasizing the importance of financial education and has applauded attempts by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) in its financial awareness efforts.
The Minister said the Ministry joins not only with the ECCB but other partners in helping to highlight important life transforming and enhancing skills and techniques. He added that persons in the Federation should become keenly aware and participate to their fullest potential in activities organized by the Bank and other financial institutions as they shed light on practices that can help unravel the financial maze.
One such activity scheduled by the Central Bank to start in the first week of March 2016 is a Savings and Investments Course. The Minister thanked the Bank for reaching out to the Ministry as far as getting teachers and others involved as this would lend itself to the sharing of the material with students. This course will run through to the end of May.
Topics will include: Personal Financial Planning; Factors Affecting Financial Decisions; Planning for Financial Goals; Types of Investment as well as Protecting Ones’ Self Against Financial Risk.
The Minister said that students should be encouraged in exploring finance by learning interesting facts such as the fact that the EC dollar turned fifty on October 5, 2015.
