MP Maynard criticizes silence of churches on crime, victimization

By: SKNLPCU, Press Release

BASSETERRE, St Kitts (SKNLPCU) – Non-Governmental organisations in St Kitts and Nevis have been called upon to raise their voices following five murders in one week, six for January this year and 40 since the new coalition PLP/CCM/PAM government took office nearly 12 months ago.

Parliamentary Representative for West Basseterre, Hon Konris Maynard Wednesday also called on the civic organisations to stand up for the hundreds of persons who have been victimised by the ruling coalition government of Prime Minister Hon Dr. Timothy Harris.

“I am calling on the present church and all churches in our society to stand up for the welfare of the people. Those who have been victimized, those have been thrown out of their jobs, and for the criminal activity now plaguing the nation and is at its highest. Where is your voice? We need your voice as well,” said Maynard, a first term Labour parliamentarian.

He stated it is not right for the civic organisations to have a voice for one particular government.

“You must be neutral across the board and say where there is wrong and say where there is right. You must come out and stop jamming up. It is your duty so to do,” said Maynard.

There have been six murders in January with five killings in the last week of that month alone, numerous incidents of shooting which left over a dozen persons with injuries and armed robberies.

St. Kitts and Nevis recorded 34 murders last year. There have been numerous home invasions including residences of Americans living on the island. The most recent incident in January has resulted in the American couple report the matter to the United States Embassy in Barbados, the St. Kitts and Nevis Embassy in Washington, DC and the local authorities.

Last September, Leader of the Opposition in the Nevis Island Assembly and former Premier Hon Joseph disclosed that some 130 homes owned by expats have been placed on the selling block following the dramatic increase in murders and armed robberies on Nevis.

“But to make matters worse nobody is buying them. The housing market is filled with houses for sale but no one to buy creating a housing slump. This is because the crime is so bad that white Expats are now in flight mode from Nevis. Many of them have been robbed and beaten viciously and they have become fearful for their lives so they are selling their homes and leaving Nevis,” said Washington DC resident Nevisian Everton “Obi” Elliott on his Facebook Page last year.
