BVI, 23 February 2016 - Residents of Jost Van Dyke are said to be enjoying the many recycling benefits of a transfer station located on the island.
The station is located in Sandy Ground was introduced by the Department of Waste Management on the island in 2014, to reduce the negative impact of glass on the incinerator and help increase the longevity of the landfill.
The recycling initiative currently focuses on commercial establishments but the department’s goal is to eventually extend the initiative to the residents of Jost Van Dyke in the first instance and then to the rest of the BVI.
An estimated 5.35 tons or 10,700 pounds of glass were recently transported from the transfer station to its partners Clean and Green VI for recycling.
Manager at the Department of Waste Management, Mr. Greg Massicote said that the business “Soggy Dollar”, which has an effective sorting system in place, has produced the largest amounts of glass bottles. He urged other businesses within the community to take similar steps in recycling.
Mr. Massicote said residents have welcomed the transfer station. He added that his department has been receiving positive feedback from the residents regarding the waste diversion activity and the promotion of recycling.
He said, “We have seen a tremendous reduction in flies and elimination of smoke on Jost Van Dyke since the transfer station became operational. The cleanliness of the facility encourages individuals to deposit waste. The bins’ waste types are easily identifiable and there is always someone to assist if necessary. Additionally, the implementation of the transfer station has provided the department with the opportunity to alter our operations to make way for recycling initiatives such as this glass recycling initiative.”
Mr. Massicote encouraged residents to become good stewards of the environment. He also commended those persons who have been doing their best to enhance the cleanliness of the Territory as the work continues to keep the B.V.I clean and green.
The Department of Waste Management continues to uphold its mission of keeping the B.V.I clean and green.
