Investigations into the electoral breaches on hold

Attorney-General the Hon. Vincent Byron

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE ongoing investigations involving alleged breaches at the Electoral Office during the 2015 General Election are said to be at a standstill.

Attorney-General the Hon. Vincent Byron explained that one aspect of the two-pronged probe is stalled due to the involvement of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

He explained that investigators had requested assistance from the DPP, but with two of them acting in that capacity and having being replaced within the last 12 months, officials have not been able to make any progress in the criminal probe of the Electoral Office.

The police had asked the DPP to do some investigation and that is stalled. Then Sinanan went, the other one came in and he has gone and I am still waiting. I am still waiting on the police! I think they were stalled because there were things that had to do with the DPP’s office.”

The AG however revealed that the second part of the two-fold investigation was completed and that he is currently in possession of the report on the breaches of the system at the Electoral Office.

“That more or less is completed and the public officer who had been there has revamped the system and the computer system has been rebuilt. That is more or less in a position to be released, but I am not exactly sure that I can say when.”

Commenting on the investigations involving the former Supervisor of Elections, Wingrove George, AG Byron explained that he is awaiting a recommendation from the DPP’s office to know if charges should be laid against him.

“I would need advice from the DPP’s office. It is not a call from the Attorney-General,” he added.

He explained that there is a separation of powers between the Attorney-General and the DPP when it comes to criminal matters and laying down a decision.

Shortly after taking office in 2015, the Government had launched an investigation into what they claimed were a number of irregularities during and after elections.
