BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ANOTHER of the Federation’s scholars has kept the flag of St. Kitts and Nevis majestically fluttering below the Caribbean sky. This time it was at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies.

Craig Tuckett, a second year Law student at the tertiary institution in Bridgetown, Barbados, edged out a number of participants to capture the Best Orator title in a Mooting Competition for Second and Third Year Law students.

Speaking with SKNVibes from the Campus, the 43-year-old explained that the competition was tedious and involved him and his team members working overtime during a two-week period to be fully prepared.

“A lot of work has gone into this competition. We had the Preliminaries, the Semi-Finals and the Final, so we had about two weeks of intense preparation which would have included all the cases and all the facts and what could have possibly been asked of us by the judges.”

Tuckett, an East Basseterre native, disclosed that his involvement in Law is a natural progression from his first degree in Agri-Business Management from the same University all the way to the Federation’s political landscape.

“I went back to St. Kitts and Nevis where I taught for a period of time, and then I got involved in the political framework of St. Kitts and Nevis. I then left for Antigua but returned to St. Kitts and became the Vice Chairman of the People's Labour Party (PLP). I then decided that I wanted to give back to my country and God blessed me in the legal profession.”

Basketball is one of the sports disciplines for which he represented the Ghetto Roots team in the National League while teaching at various schools in the Federation.

Tuckett stated that from among the large number of competitors, his three-member team was adjudged the Best Second Year Team in addition him walking away with the Best Orator title.

According to the former teacher, the competition is an annual fixture on the faculty's calendar for over 10 years and that it focuses on students’ skills in the art of Trial Preparation and Advocacy for the Court.

He used the opportunity to thank all those who continue to support him in his endeavour.

“It is my honour and inspiration to ensure that the persons I care for and my country of birth are proud in all of my endeavours, and I am looking forward to returning home and continue with the country's development.”
