BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A disciplined performance by students of the Charles E Mills Secondary School ensured that they retain the TDC Inter-School Championships title.

This is the third consecutive year and the 23rd time that athletes of the Charles E Mills Secondary School have dominated the championships.

Viewed by a near-capacity crowd at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium in Bird Rock, the Sandy Point institution ran away with 27 gold, 23 silver and 19 bronze medals, leaving Washington Archibald with 22 gold, 16 silver and 19 bronze, and Verchild’s third with 16 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals to head back to the drawing board for the 2017 event.

Lleewlyn Pyke, the winning coach, told media representatives that his team performed fabulously despite several challenges encountered on the penultimate day.

“I expected that we would have done better, but we had some disappointments Saturday evening. We stuck to it and we came out…we decided that we would finish it on Sunday.”

He pointed out that members of his team could be considered a disciplined unit that met with a strict athletics programme that allows the school to continue to produce top quality athletes.

“It is a combination of talent and strict strategies that we have in place. For example, if you don’t train you don’t participate. So we actually have a quality team that would medal.”

The Charles E Mills Secondary School dominated yet again in almost all aspects of the competition on the third and final day, winning in both the Field and Track events.

Ketriana Huggins led the charge when she blazed home in the Girls Under-16 100m Finals in 12.97 seconds, leaving all competiors way behind, including her compatriot Earleane Webbe who occupied the third spot, while Charlestown Secondary’s Tineisha Perkins ran in second.

Khadija Duncan came in third in the Girls U-18 Long Jump, losing out to Shaquifa Maloney (5.32m) of Verchild’s High School and second placed Aaliyah Gibson of Washington Archibald High with a leap of 5.20m.

Heading into the final series of the evening, the team’s 4x100m Relay, Washington Archibald had a slim chance of dethroning the defending champions, but they had to win all eight events in their quest.

The competition lived up to its billing as WHS dominated several of the events, but the task was too much for them as the official results indicated a number of exchanges were made outside of the handover zones.

Minister of Education and Sport, the Hon. Shawn Richards was on hand to assist in presenting trophies and other awards to the winning institution.

The Minister is also the area Representative of which Charles E Mills Secondary School is a part – Constituency Number Five.
