PM Harris celebrates with Constituents on Good Friday

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts –  PRIME MINISTER Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris had put aside politics for one day and joined members of his Constituency to celebrate Easter with his annual Kite Flying and Family Fun Day activities.

A small crowd had gathered at Black Rocks to join their Constituency Representative in the annual Kite Flying and Domino Competitions.

The initiative, which has been an annual fixture on Dr. Harris’ calendar of activities, has been ongoing for a number of years and he told SKNVibes that “ it was our way of finding something constructive to which the young people could relate”.

“We thought that kite flying had become a rich part of the folklore of St. Kitts and Nevis and we had the initial showing, we had a fairly good response and we thought that it should be continued. Every year since that time it has been growing from strength to strength”.

This year's event saw participants from neighbouring villages including St. Paul’s, while a group of supporters from Nevis took to the Black Rocks area to enter the Kite Flying Competition.

“We determined that it adds to the competitive nature of the kite flying to allow as many participants as possible and to allow our own constituents to compete,” Dr. Harris said.

According to the Prime Minister, he was happy with the turnout at this year’s event, noting that over the years the organizing committee has tried to put forward activities that enhance the range of experience that those coming to fly kites would have.

“What we have tried to do is to look at the range of experiences that has made the kite flying over the years exciting and would want to make people engage. We have provided some incentives for that. We would want to find ways of adding to the field, add to the length of time that people can come and be part of the activities.”

This year saw participants competing in various categories, including the oldest and youngest participant and the largest kite as well as the most colourful one.

Dr. Harris said that this year saw more categories created, pointing out that it was done to make the fun more inclusive for both the young and old.

Out on the field, it was an afternoon filled with fun as participants who competed in the large kite category fought long and hard to get their masterpieces in the air, but one that measured in excess of eight feet went up for several minutes and decided to go its own way leaving the owner with the string in his hands as he scampered to locate where it landed.

The largest kite was flown by Antonio Williams of Saddlers who was assisted by 10 other individuals in getting it hoisted.

Williams’ kite measured 140 x 84 inches and he was declared winner, copping the $750 prize, while Kelston Hazel flew the most creative kite and won a cash prize of $350.

Nigel Browne’s went the highest and he took home a cash prize of $300.

The oldest person category honour went to 74-year-old Norris Taylor of Tabernacle who was awarded $150 and a case of drinks.

Heavy rainfall had brought the Family Fun Day to a premature end with several uncompleted activities.

According to the planning committee, those events would be completed at a planned Labour Day activity.
