Sammy to get hero’s welcome; Samuels fined...

West Indies captain Darren Sammy

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHILE the President of the West Indies Cricket Board has admonished West Indies captain Darren Sammy for his outspoken comments during a post-match interview in India, the Government of St. Lucia is planning a special event to welcome and honour the island’s top sports personality.

According to St. Lucia News Online, the intention was made clear by Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony, who praised Sammy for a job well done as captain of the region’s team that won the ICC Twenty20 World Cup Final played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India on Sunday (Apr. 3).

“The humble Darren Sammy has made us proud and this region proud,” Anthony reportedly told a gathering at the Saint Lucia Labour Party public meeting in Cul de Sac, held on Sunday.

The Prime Minister  credited Sammy and the female West Indies cricket team for bringing back the former glory and honour to West Indies cricket, which has been absent for many years.

At a post-match interview following the historic victory, the all-rounder declared that his team “felt disrespected by the Board coming into the tournament” and he had sided with the CARICOM Heads of Government in their call for the disbandment of the Wycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron-led Executives of the WICB.

Just hours after that remark, the WICB issued a press release in which President Cameron admonished Sammy for it and other comments that he made.

Meanwhile, Marlon Samuels, one of the heroes in the West Indies victory in the Final against England, was fined 30 percent of his match fees for breaching the world’s cricketing body’s Code of Conduct.

According to cricbuzz, Samuels was found to have breached Article 2.1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match”.

The incident occurred during the final over run-chase when Samuels used abusive and offensive language directed at Ben Stokes.

He admitted to committing the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

The cricket news outlet also stated that the charge levelled against Samuels was preferred by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Rod Tucker, as well as third and fourth umpires Marais Erasmus and Bruce Oxenford, respectively, all of whom are from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.

For all first offences, Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee.

Samuels had contributed a defiant knock of 85 in the West Indies four-wicket (161) victory over England in the Final of the 2016 World Twenty20 Tournament.
