Importance of finding out health status underscored on World Health Day

By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 07, 2016 (SKNIS): Residents attending the health screenings coordinated by the Ministry of Health in commemoration of World Health Day, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to get free and confidential health checks while noting the activity’s significance.

Josephine Wilkins of St. Paul’s addressed the importance of good health to life in general.

“Well it’s very important for us to check our health, because that’s the main part of life,” Ms. Wilkins said. “You know, you check your blood pressure, you check your sugar and see if everything alright for you.  Sometimes I have headaches, but I drink something for it, so it’s very important for me to find out and important for all of us.”

Similarly Catherine Trotman of St. Peter’s noted that it is important to know one’s health status particularly if one were to fall ill.

“I think it’s very important for example, for example if you go down town or you go anywhere and you happen to fall down,” Ms. Trotman said. “If you get tested you will know what your condition is. If you don’t know your condition and you fall ill, nobody will understand what’s wrong with you until they call in the Doctor.  That’s why it’s very important.

Ms. Trotman also expressed how she felt about the overall screening experience.

“Well for me it’s going well,” Ms. Trotman said. “The nurses are very nice, they explain everything to you, they are very polite and I enjoy interacting with them.”

Similarly Kenmore Johnson of Sandy Point said that his screening experience was “pleasant” and explained why he decided to take the tests.

“It is because you will know your status, you will know if you have sugar (diabetes), or pressure (hypertension) or if you have HIV,” Mr. Johnson said.

Free screenings can be obtained at any of the Ministry of Health’s facilities such as health centres and hospitals as well as during community outreach activities, such as the World Health Day commemoration, where screenings are usually coordinated.
