(EMU) – St. Kitts, April, 14, 2016: In an effort to train teachers in school safety solutions and enhance its school safety policy, the Ministry of Education in partnership with USAID- Office of Foreign Disaster conducted a workshop on Wednesday April 13th.

The USAID- Office of Foreign Disaster has assisted the Ministry of Education with such efforts in the past in keeping with regulatory training of teachers and other school staff and was pleased to lend its expertise with the development of the policy.

Mrs. Amanda Serrant Edmead, Education Officer outlined some of the plans that the Ministry of Education intends to implement following this workshop.  “We are going to continue the completion of the school safety policy and we are also going to look at the training and ensuring that the teachers and principals from each school complete the school safety course.”

The five (5) year plan proposed by USAID/OFAD includes continuous training and summer workshops for children which includes training in the use of fire extinguishers and first aid courses.

Stakeholders from within the Federation including the Ministry of Health, Fire and Rescue Services, National Emergency Management Agency, Red Cross, Principals and representatives from various Departments in Education, were all impressed and eager to move forward with the plans set forth by USAID-OFAD.  Members of the USAID-OFAD team included, Mr. Andrew Strobel – Program Manager, Mrs. Beryl Ambrister – Sub-Regional Manager and Ms. Ann Jean Baptiste – Disaster Risk Management Specialist.
