CFBC student teachers exhibit creativity in Teaching Aids

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A simple but educational exhibition to highlight the creativity of student teachers of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College was held yesterday (Apr.15) on the institution’s campus.

The exhibition showcased several teaching aids that students at the College created as part of their midterm assessment, Science and Geography Lecture Glenroy Blanchette said.

Speaking with SKNVibes, Blanchette pointed out that with the absence of a number of important components in schools in the Federation, the use of teaching aids would vastly assist in getting lessons over to students, and as such the project was important to those teachers who are being trained at the College.

“Often times teachers do not have access to ready-made technologies in terms of a lot of the stuff that you will find in modern schools, and so they utilize their creativity to bring some of the concepts to light in the classroom to clarify students misconceptions about certain concepts.”

He said that the aids would assist teachers in making instructions come to life as well as creating fun and interaction among students.

On display at the exhibit were a number of science and mathematics projects created by the students, including pieces depicting the solar system.

“We have models depicting phases of the moon, solar eclipse. We also have models showing various ecosystems, different habitats and we have models showing various mathematical pieces,” Blanchette said.

The exercise was described as the brainchild of the Dean of Teacher Education, Jocelyne Pennyfeather, who was ably supported by the management of the facility.

Currently, there are approximately 100 students training to become professional teachers in both the first and second years at the institution.

According to Blanchette, the institution encourages the student teachers to challenge themselves in finding new and innovative ways, including the use of technology to help interact with students in the classroom.

He pointed out that even though there are charts and other learning aids in most classrooms, the absence of technology in schools is creating a problem.

With that being absent, Blanchette posited that it calls for teachers to be more creative in their teaching methods.
