Volunteers needed for Annual Youth Development Programme

Last year’s Camp Dinner celebrated Mardi Gras
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 19, 2016 (SKNIS): The Department of Youth Empowerment has issued a call for volunteers interested in giving their time and energies to the Annual Residential Summer Camp.

The 33rd camp is scheduled to run from July 17 to 31 at the Beach Allen Primary School and persons interested in serving as dorm leaders, tutors, or those wishing to make donations are encouraged to visit the Youth Department on Church Street.

Maluska Lapsey, a staff member of the department, said that the camp offers a fun and safe atmosphere for children between 8 and 16 years and described the experience for adult volunteers as rewarding. The statement is backed by reports from previous dorm leaders who often return every year to signup. However, work and other social commitments, as well as overseas academic pursuits mean that there are vacancies to be filled annually.

“Camp is a life changing experience and I think persons should register to assist the youth empowerment staff to help mould our future leaders in the right direction,” she said.

As part of the positive interventions during the two-week event, the participants learn various disciplines such as drumming, dancing, marching band, baking, fruit design, art and craft, and music. Modeling and pageantry were introduced last year, while floral arrangement classes will be introduced this year.

Fun and entertaining activities such as a talent show, camp dinner, public march and others will also be held.

Individuals interested in volunteering, making a donation, or seeking additional information can visit the Department of Youth Empowerment on Church Street or telephone 467-1393.
