Agriculture Open Day attracts displays from all sectors

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 23rd edition of the  annual Agriculture Open Day in St. Kitts and Nevis got underway today (Apr. 21) under the theme ‘Engendering Resilience to deal with Global Realities’.

According to Director of Agriculture Melvin James, this year’s theme was chosen to show that the Department of Agriculture is well equipped to deal with a number of adversities that is affecting the sector, including Climate Change.

Addressing the media on the Agriculture Department’s grounds in Green Lands where the exhibition is taking place, James said that issues such as the loss of preferential treatment, free trade and the impact it would have on the local agriculture sector are several areas of discussion at the event.

“In the displays that one would find today, we tried to capture all of that. For example, you would find things which relate to renewable energy. We have displays of solar energy and wind energy where we want to reduce our dependence on fossil fuel,” James said.

Additionally, this year’s event saw the inclusion of a number of technology-based companies showcasing their products.

Surveillance cameras and drone technology were two of the modern gadgets on display at the event, all of which, the Director opined, fit into the modern aspect of agriculture.

Four secondary learning institutions from St. Kitts and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College had items on display which James said, “They have put together models capturing the theme of sustainability and reusing materials.”

One such initiative was a replica of the Cayon community, dubbed Green Valley.

With the Federation hosting a week of activities in celebration of Earth Day, the Agriculture Department has decided to partner with the Local Organising Committee.

Director James pointed out that the Agriculture Department is also responsible for greenhouse gases, and as such the move to partner with the Committee was a timely one.

“We are very proud that agriculture in St. Kitts and Nevis, for a very long time, is cognisant for that kind of thing and we see ourselves as low contributors,” he said.
