Fire leads to closure of Courthouse

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A fire that occurred yesterday (Apr. 26) at the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex had led to the closure of the Courthouse and also the need for urgent remedial work to the building today.

Attorney General the Hon. Vincent Byron, while speaking at today’s sitting of the Federal Parliament, informed of the incident and explained that the fire was electrical in nature.

He said both the St. Kitts and Nevis Fire and Rescue Services and the Public Works Department were summoned to the scene; the former to contain and extinguish the blaze.

The Attorney General said it was determined that there “was a problem with the electrical mains on top of the building” and following a joint assessment by the Fire Department and the Public Works Department, it was discovered that remedial work was needed to be done to the wiring of the air conditioning units on the top of the building.

The necessary work, Byron explained, is being carried out today and, as such, the Sir Lee Llewellyn Moore Judicial and Legal Services Complex had been closed for the day and would reopen tomorrow.

“Taking into consideration the safety and convenience of the staff, the general public and the documents housed at the court building, the decision was taken to close the court building for one day to facilitate the remedial work to be carried out and completed.”

The AG offered apologies on behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs to those who would have been inconvenienced by the closure of the building.
