Chiller Unit Installed At Central Administration Complex

BVI, 4 May 2016 - The Government of the Virgin Islands through the Facilities Management Unit has installed a temporary 250 ton Chiller Unit at the Central Administration Complex.

The unit was installed yesterday May 3 and will provide a more reliable air conditioned environment for Public Officers and visitors to the building.

The previous system malfunctioned and caused irregular temperatures and discomfort to public officers and visitors to the building. Investigations show that corrosion to the equipment was due to sea-blast. The three-story building is in close proximity to the sea which causes high humidity levels in the atmosphere.

The temporary unit will be commissioned for three months after which the permanent unit from Trane Puerto Rico, Inc. will be installed in July, as contracted.

Both units are expected to aid in keeping the air quality of the building to standard and provide a more reliable cooling system.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Communications and Works, Mr. Anthony McMaster stated, “The unit shows Government’s commitment to providing a safe working environment for all employees and visitors to the building. We will continue to take measures in providing an adequate air system.”

Over the years, several remedial works have been done on the building such as repairing the roof; refurbishing air handlers; antifungal fogging; and installing filters, every three months. Ceiling tiles and carpets have also been replaced in a number of offices.

The Ministry of Communications and Works remains committed to ensuring the continued development and proper maintenance of the Central Administration Complex in accordance with occupational safety and health standards.
