Cayon Football Team surprises mothers

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ALTHOUGH more than a week has passed since the act was done, mothers of the members of the Cayon Football Team are still beaming with pride and joy having received a memorable and special surprise last week on Mother’s Day.

On that day, the team was scheduled to compete against another and it was thought to be a good opportunity to surprise the mothers of the team members in a way they had never done before.

President of the Cayon Football Club Kaznee Williams told SKNVibes that the mothers were invited to the game and whereas it is customary for the players to walk onto the field by themselves, they were accompanied by their mothers. And when they got there each player presented their mother with a rose as an act of appreciation and honour.

“We planned it last year and it didn’t come off so we got the opportunity this year again because we had a game on that day so we decided to do it so that the players could get the chance to publically honour their mothers. It was also - in a way - giving back to the community because half of them are members of the community. The gesture was showing them that we not only appreciate the players but the mothers also.”

The mothers were invited to observe their sons in action and according to Williams, some had never seen their sons play football before and were impressed with their skills.

“The mothers were excited and a few of them never saw their sons play and they actually go to see them that day. I spoke with the mother of Alex Charles the day after and she said she didn’t know her son could play so well and that that was the first time she had seen him play. She was overwhelmed. She said she loved the gesture and the flowers and she really appreciated that we actually took time to honour the mothers.”

Williams said the team has also been praised by the public for the thoughtful gesture and that the Cayon Football Team might be the first football team to honour mothers in such a fashion.
