Female driver believed to have injured elderly woman charged

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE female driver who is believed to have knocked down an elderly woman and failed to report the incident to the authorities, was recently taken into police custody and charged.

Dionis Underwood of New Road Housing Project was taken into police custody at about midday Monday (May 16), three days after the incident occurred.

Information confirmed by the Traffic Department indicates that sometime before 10:00 a.m. on Friday (May. 13), 61-year-old Mary French was attempting to cross College Street Ghaut along the Bay Road when a vehicle came out of the stop and struck her.

She had received some assistance from members of the public and was placed in the same vehicle that struck her and was transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital.

The Traffic Department indicated to this publication that the driver had failed to report the incident. However, although the Department had learnt of the accident, it was oblivious as to who the assailant was.

It has since reported that as a result of information provided by members of the public, the identity of the driver was revealed and she was taken into police custody.

The Department has informed that Underwood was charged yesterday (May 17) with driving without being covered with insurance and failing to report a traffic accident to the authorities.

SKNVibes understands she was also served with a notice of intended prosecution for careless driving, and it is likely that the owner of the vehicle would also face charges.

The Department expressed its belief that the information given by the public was because of an article penned and published by this media house soliciting assistance. And it has extended thanks to all those who were instrumental in the progression of this case.

This publication understands that French is still hospitalised and is said to have suffered a neck injury.

It is possible that Underwood would make application for bail.
