Taipei, Taiwan, May 19, 2016 (SKNIS)—Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, along with his delegation, touched down in Taipei, Republic of China (Taiwan) in the early morning of May 19 to a warm red-carpet welcome at Taoyuan International Airport.
The delegation, led by the prime minister, is on an official visit to The Republic of China (Taiwan) for the inauguration of the Asian country’s first female president, Dr. Tsai Ing-Wen, on May 20; His Excellency Dr. Chen-jen will assume the office of Vice President. The delegation includes Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Vance Amory and Mrs. Amory, Attorney General, Honourable Vincent Byron and Mrs. Byron, and Director-General of The St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service (SKNIS), Mr. Lesroy Williams. Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency George Gow Wei Chiou, is accompanying the delegation.
Prime Minister Harris and his delegation were greeted at the airport by Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency David Y.L. Lin, Deputy Foreign Minister, Honourable Javier Hou, Chief of Protocol, Andrew Zhang and other high level officials including Her Excellency Jasmine E. Huggins, St. Kitts and Nevis’ Ambassador to the Republic of China (Taiwan).
In his official remarks to be delivered on the occasion of the inauguration of President Dr. Tsai Ing-Wen, Prime Minister Harris is expected to congratulate the first female president, while highlighting the long-standing friendship of 32 years between the two countries and his government’s desire for that bilateral friendship to continue and grow stronger. He will highlight Taiwan’s rejection of limitations of gender for those aspiring to serve at the highest levels of government and its democratic maturity that ushered in a seamless and orderly transition of power. Ways in which Taiwan has partnered with St. Kitts and Nevis in areas such as education, agriculture, technology and culture will also be outlined.
President Tsai will assemble a team on May 20 to rule and lead Taiwan on their five promises in both stabilizing the society and reforming the politics. They will draft important legislation in social economy planning, labour welfare, education and culture, system reform and democracy and human rights.
Some activities on the itinerary for Prime Minister Harris’ delegation’s visit include a visit to the Information and Technology Court, Taiwan High Court; a visit to CCTV Control Center, Taipei City Police Department; a visit to the Embassy of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis; a trip to Penghu; Prime Minister Harris’ first call on President Tsai Ing-Wen; and a meeting with St. Kitts and Nevis students studying in Taiwan.
