Tortola, British Virgin Islands, May 20, 2016 – The yearly wait is almost over for one of the most highly anticipated nautical events of the Caribbean. The British Virgin Islands (BVI) will once again serve as the playground for the 2016 Leverick Bay Poker Run, the renowned nautical and charitable event that attracts thousands of people and hundreds of local and international power boaters. This year the event takes on Sunday, May 29th – just one week away.

Already in its 14th consecutive year, organisers of the Leverick Bay Poker Run are planning for a fully packed event complete with the rush of adrenaline and fun sought by powerboat enthusiasts, spectators, partygoers, and more that will gather in the BVI.

Competitors can expect prizes up to $15,000 in cash for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. More prizes will also be awarded for 4th, 5th, and 6th places. The official start of the run and fun is at 11:00 a.m. departing from Leverick Bay Marina accelerating to the next five stops:

    1st Stop/Card Harbour View Marina

2nd Stop/Card Scaramouche Restaurant, Sopers Hole

3rd Stop/Card “Pirates The Bight”, Norman Island

    4th Stop/Card VGYH Rendezvous Bar

5th Stop/Finish Line at Leverick Bay Marina, North Sound where the Leverick Bay Annual Poker Run prizes will be announced

Every stop is worth spending some time enjoying its live music, great atmosphere, food and beverages, plus all the people cheering and sharing during the event.

Aside from all the fun everyone will experience at the stops and during the award ceremony at Leverick Bay, the most important aspect of the run is the strong support for charity the organizers of the Leverick Bay Poker Run continue to receive from the boating community, and all those who enjoy a good on the water. Some of the local charities who've benefited from proceeds include the Virgin Gorda Charitable Trust, The Virgin Gorda Diabetes Association, the Virgin Gorda Animal Rescue, the Virgin Gorda Track Team, The Virgin Gorda Cars Association, and the Red Cross, among others.

    About the British Virgin Islands

An archipelago comprised of 60 islands and cays, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) are located approximately 50 miles east of Puerto Rico, in the northwestern region of the Caribbean Sea. The main islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. Road Town, located on Tortola, is the British Virgin Islands’ capital.

Renowned as one of the world’s premier sailing destinations, the BVI’s dynamic and vast topography provides a unique opportunity to “island hop” with ease — with each island characterized by its own cultural and natural wonders. Among these attractions are The Baths on Virgin Gorda, Anegada’s Flamingo Pond, White Bay on Jost Van Dyke, and Tortola’s Sage Mountain. Destination highlights also include world-class yachting, snorkeling, hiking, sustainable tourism and, for diving enthusiasts, the Caribbean’s most stunning wreck dives, such as the RMS Rhone.

A pristine and romantic island paradise evoking a bygone era, the British Virgin Islands are nonetheless easily accessible for U.S. travelers flying into Tortola/Beef Island’s Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) via frequent connecting service from nearby Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Antigua, St. Kitts or St. Maarten/St. Martin. Visitors traveling to the BVI from St. Thomas can also travel via ferry. Despite its status as a United Kingdom territory, the BVI conveniently uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency.

For more information on all that the British Virgin Islands have to offer, visit the official BVI Tourist Board website at www.bvitourism.com or contact 1-800-835-8530.
