Penghu County, Taiwan, May 24, 2016 (SKNIS)—While in Penghu County, Taiwan, for a two day visit (May 22-23), Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable made an official call on leader of the Penghu County Government, Kuang-Fu Chen, Penghu County Magistrate, where he held talks about bilateral cooperation in the area of tourism and the fishing industry.

“At home we are developing our fisheries industry and I note that you have strong assets in marine development and marine life and we would want to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation in building vessels more suited for the sea,” Prime Minister Harris said, while adding that he will follow up to see how his Government could cooperate with the Penghu County Government in the area of sharing information, experience and assets in marine and maritime development with the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

County Magistrate, Mr. Chen, noted the strong relationship that Taiwan had with St. Kitts and Nevis, and reiterated his good will to assist in the area of tourism and fisheries.

In particular, Mr. Chen said that Penghu County will host the Congress of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World in 2018 and issued an invitation to the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to participate. Penghu’s bays and beaches have made it a main tourist destination and the island is a member of the International Organization of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World, which is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) supported by UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization), and tasked with promoting the protection of the natural and cultural resources of the world’s marine bays.

“Penghu is fast becoming a favourite spot in Taiwan. You mentioned the international conference in 2018 that is going to take place here. We also have some beautiful beaches and bays and we are looking forward to participating in that international conference to see how that could further advance our country as a premier tourist attraction,” said Prime Minister Harris to Mr. Chen, while noting that Penghu’s bays are now part of a global world recognizing the importance of bays and beaches but more importantly how they help to sustain the life of a people.

Tourism has become one of the main sources of income for Penghu, and Prime Minister Harris and his delegation were afforded the opportunity to visit the Penghu National Scenic Area that comprises most but not all of the islands and islets of the archipelago. Other historical sites visited in the island included the Ocean Resources Museum, the Marine Life Propagation Station, Erkan Historical Village, and a visit to the Penghu Ocean Fireworks Festival on May 23.

Prime Minister Harris thanked the Penghu County Government for sponsoring the two-day trip.

“We want to thank you again your excellency for that opportunity to meet with you and to say we had a wonderful experience with you and members of your government. We are charmed by the hospitality of your people, the beautiful vistas, seascapes and landscapes and we look forward to experiencing ever more of the beauty of Penghu. Thank you for making our trip a memorable one,” he said.
