BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ACTING Minister of National Security Hon. Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd is calling on citizen and residents to throw their full support behind the Police Force in its bid to stem the flow of crime.
This statement, among others, came on the heels of two weeks of heightened criminal activities that saw a number persons being gunned down and injuries to several others.
Speaking on the government’s ‘Working for You’ programme, Liburd posited that all is not lost and the Police Force needs the support of the public.
“The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and Defence Force, they need your support,” he pleaded.
Liburd disclosed that the Government of National Unity has re-equipped one of the Coast Guard’s vessel that has been out of operation close to eight years.
“We have ensured as a Team Unity Administration that the Stalwart has launched and will do its patrol for surveillance in some of our waters.”
Since the spate of recent robberies and burglaries, including the home of the Attorney General, FedEx and MoneyGram, the Police Force had suspended time-off and vacation for all officers and has increased its members’ presence on the streets.
While in Central Basseterre earlier today (May 25), SKNVibes had observed a number of uniformed officers on foot patrol along various streets.
The Minister also said, “As a team Unity Government, we have advanced technology in terms of closed circuit television coverage,” and reminded of the recent addition of six well-trained dogs to the K-9 Unit and the procurement of drone technology.
Deputy Commissioner Hilroy Brandy had recently told SKNVibes that two of the six dogs would be sent to Nevis and the remainder would be in St. Kitts.
The dogs will be working along with their handlers at all ports of entry of the Federation and they will also be used at major sport events on both islands.
