Ministry officials plan to resurface island main road

Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Post, Urban Development and Transport
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 26, 2016 (SKNIS):  The Ministry of Public Infrastructure has taken the initiative to ensure that roads are maintained as a means of safety, especially for commuters.

On Wednesday’s (May 25) edition of “Working for You” the Honourable Ian Patches Liburd, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Post, Urban Development and Transport, said that the safety of all, as well as safe and accessible roads, is of great importance.

“We are going around the country patching and resurfacing where necessary,” said the minister. “And there is going to be announced in due time, a project where over perhaps a three year period we can look at resurfacing the entire island main road.”

He noted that the government made a commitment to improve the island’s infrastructure.

“One thing we promised before we came into office, one thing we committed to is that we were not going to leave roads to political expediency,” he said. “We believe that we have an obligation to motorists, to drivers and to pedestrians, to ensure that we have safe and decent roads.”

The minister made specific mention of the road along the Old Road Bay and stated that the government will make it priority to have it fixed in order to safeguard lives, as it is used on a daily basis.  “I can assure the people of the Federation that that is my commitment to you,” he promised.

In an earlier edition of the programme (December 09, 2015), Minister Liburd on behalf of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure made a commitment to the upkeep of the road and maintenance.

Minister Liburd stated that the government is mindful that people pay road tax, and in doing so it is only fair for roads to be free of pot holes and in good conditions.

At a ceremony to mark the opening of the new Tunnel at the Dr. Kennedy Simmonds Highway on Friday, May 20, the minister with responsibility for roads made a public plea for concrete truck drivers to try to avoid spillage of concrete on the roads as it will reduce the lifespan of the road.
