BVI, 27 May 2016 - Residents and visitors participating in the 2016 Poker Run this weekend are being urged to practice proper marine safety.

The Virgin Islands Shipping Registry is encouraging participants to prepare for, and practice their emergency responses for accidents and incidents such as man overboard, drowning, collision and serious injury prior to the Poker Run. They note that responsibility for safe operation lies with the Master of the vessel.

Senior Marine Officer, Mr. Jamil Vanterpool said, “Apart from sailing and power boating, the British Virgin Islands is host to various water sports activities such as swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, diving, surfing and kite surfing. Therefore the safety measures must be strictly observed to avoid any accident or incident.”

All participants are advised to operate only within the designated area during the competition. That is Leverick Bay – East End – Soper’s Hole - Norman Island –

Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour– Leverick Bay.

Persons are also asked to always maintain a sharp lookout for other users of the Territory’s waterways.  All boats should be fit for purpose and fitted with the necessary equipment for safe navigation. Participants should also obey the collision regulations as well as the rules of the Poker Run competition.

The public and other water users are reminded to be aware of boats going at full speed within the area of the poker run during the time of the races. They should also avoid if possible water sport activities in the area of the Poker Run for the duration of the competition if possible.

For more information on the Poker Run, telephone Mr. Nick Willis at (284) 495 7421 or visit the website at www.leverickbaymarina.com.
