BVI, 30 May 2016 - The Ministry of Communications and Works is pleased with the progress of on-going road works under the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Loan.

These works include rehabilitation works in Huntum’s Ghut and Long Trench. Road work in Huntums Ghut is about 80 percent complete and final works on the multi-sectional rehabilitation project will be executed in the coming weeks.

This project was contracted to Quality Construction Limited last October for approximately $1,041,551.75.  Works are expected to be completed by June. The project is on-schedule and within budget.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Communications and Works, Mr. Anthony McMaster said, “We are satisfied with the development of the projects and the improvement of the areas affected by sub-tropical storm Otto in 2010.”

The project’s contractors are also using building techniques that will ensure strong hurricane resistant structures. One technique includes soil nailing within the retaining walls. The soil nailing technique brings soil stability in areas where landslides are highly probable and is currently being executed at Pockwood Pond for the Phase V Power Development Programme. Retaining walls on the project also incorporate Gabion baskets, 40 percent of concrete and 60 percent of 10-inch rocks.

Road rehabilitation works continue in Long Trench and include construction of three reinforced concrete retaining walls, resurfacing of the damaged and undermined pavement, along the left side of the road. Road works in Long Trench began in February and is estimated to last for six months. This contract was awarded to Autland Heavy Equipment Co. Limited, in the amount $670,261.84.

Six projects funded by the CDB in areas including Palestina; Ballast Bay; Parham Town; Fortune Ghut; and Thomas Land are now complete.
