Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 09, 2016 (SKNIS): In celebration of World Accreditation Day 2016, an Informational Fair was held today at the St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards (SKNBS) offices at La Guerite, which was aimed at highlighting the importance of accreditation, standards, certification, testing and inspection across sectors.

This includes how certifications can strengthen crime fighting efforts; the benefits of accreditation to enhance environmental protections and how it can improve the ministry’s work on policies and regulations. The accreditation fair also presents an opportunity for inter-ministry collaboration.

World Accreditation Day is a global initiative to raise awareness on the importance of accreditation. This year’s theme is “Accreditation: A Global Tool to Support Public Policy.”

Hiram Williams, Director (Ag) of the SKNBS, said that the focus this year is on ways in which government activities are associated with regulations, environmental protection and health and how safety can benefit from accreditation.

Director of Trade Research, in the Ministry of International Trade, Jasemine Warner-Weekes, added that the theme focuses on how accreditation can be a global tool to support administrative and regulatory policy in the public sector, with a particular emphasis on national and local government and regulators from fishing to food production, from energy to healthcare, trade to telecommunications and a number of other sectors of the economy.

She stated that across the globe, accreditation is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool to enhance regulation, promote good governance, fair markets and encourage public confidence.

“It is a key tool that government can and should use to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services to citizens and residents,” said the Director of Trade research. “The benefits of accreditation are far reaching, ranging from increased confidence in data analysis, reducing redundancy in policy implementation and improving the efficiency of the assessment process. Above all, accreditation helps government to strengthen public confidence in products and services.”

The recognition is jointly established by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).

Participants were able to browse informational booths from various government agencies, view innovative multimedia presentations, and peruse accreditation case studies from around the world.
