West Indies to correct weak areas ahead of clash with SA

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOLLOWING their four-wicket upset victory over Australia at Warner Park on Monday evening (Jun. 13), West Indies Head Coach Phil Simmons informed that there are several areas on which his team has to improve for their clash against South Africa this evening (Jun. 15).

Addressing the media at a post match press conference on Monday, Simmons explained that he would look to work on the discipline of his batsman when they are put in a winning position.

“I think Marlon and Bravo finishing off the game rather than somebody getting out. It is a case where we have the guys put in a position and they need to carry on.”

The head coach also pointed to the bowling and fielding departments as the other areas that need improvement, stressing that after every game there is a one percent improvement that must be had.

“We are always looking to improve our fielding, which I think to is good as it has been, and I think we would continue to improve on the way we bowl in the first 10 overs and things like that,“ Simmons added.

West Indies were cruising at 240 for 3 before three quick wickets peg them down even though they were on course.

Hard hitting right hander Kieron Pollard and poster boy Carlos Brathwaite stuck around and ensured that the West Indies got over the line.

Addressing the media on the victory over the World Champions, Simmons noted that the team realised that that their batting performance against the Aussies in Guyana was what led to their downfall in that game, and as such they sought to execute a better showing this time around.

“It is a good feeling to know that we beat Australia who are World Champions and number one team in the world. So it means that we are moving in the right direction.”

Meanwhile, after capitulating to the Aussies, South Africa’s Captain Faf Du Plessis noted that his team would seek to improve their batting performance when they come up against the West Indies.

He noted that the team is not a one or two-man show but it has five quality batsmen, including himself, who are capable of performing at the big moments.

“Our batting has been extremely strong the last few years. I suppose the strength of our team is our batting capabilities and also we have not relied on AB as much. We have gone through series where Ashim hasn’t scored runs…”

A poor batting display by the South Africans saw their last seven wickets folding for 42 runs against a seasoned Australian line-up.

Australia sits at the top of the table with nine points, while the West Indies are second on eight and South Africa in the cellar with five.

Action bowls off this afternoon from 1:00 p.m. at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium.
