Child Month March gives voice to children says Coordinator

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE procession seemed never-ending when the youngest of the Federation’s generations marched through the streets of Basseterre to bring an official closure to a month-long celebration of Child Month 2016.

Early Childhood Coordinator June Wallace spoke with SKNVibes yesterday (Jun. 24) and explained that the movement was endeavouring to send a bold and clear message to the Federation that in order for its future to be secured, the nation must build strong children by instilling good values in them.

Marching from the Greenlands area, the procession took the traditional route and Wallace indicated that participation from the 75 nurseries and pre-schools on the island was overwhelming.

Some of the schools were extravagant in their presentations and had their children dressed in various costumes.

As the Federation’s future leaders marched through the streets of Basseterre, they were observed and, in some cases, cheered on by onlookers who would have slipped away from their offices momentarily to show their support to the little ones.

Most of the children were accompanied by either one of their parents/guardian or both, a situation which is encouraged by the Early Childhood Development Unit.

Wallace said the support for the march was “tremendous” and “enormous”.

“We are trying to send a message to the nation and to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to instill values, build strong children and secure the future. And that’s a powerful revelation because, as a sector, our responsibility, our priority is to ensure that children’s rights are being kept, children’s rights are being advocated. And as advocates we can only solicit the help of parents, the general public to instill the good values.”

She said yesterday’s exercise was in effect giving children a voice which they would not be able to give themselves.

“I think there is a psychologist who said that values are transmitted throughout the generations through children. And knowing that, it implies that we have to become intentional in instilling proper values. Values are beliefs, they are things that are thought of as important, worthwhile and worth striving for. So we are giving children a voice and that is what we are actually doing today and we were doing it in unison. We were strengthening the voice of children throughout St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The march culminated at the Independence Square where the children and their loved ones were engaged in a time of relaxation, fun and games.
