Tee off for Turtles Charity Golf Challenge to crown 10th Annual Sea Turtle Conservation weekend

Press Release

Pennsylvania School Librarian and Sea Turtle Art Design Winner to be guest of honor as weekend events broadcast live on Periscope

NEVIS, WEST INDIES, June 24, 2016 -- For the 10th anniversary of the Nevis Sea Turtle Conservation Weekend, Four Seasons Resort Nevis is hosting the Tee Off for Turtles Charity Golf Challenge to benefit the Resort’s decade-long partner Sea Turtle Conservancy. A part of each player’s green fees will go towards an adoption of a sea turtle to help the Sea Turtle Conservancy continue to aid scientists around the world track and better understand the migratory patterns of these majestic marine reptiles.

Players will join teams and play a nine-hole scramble on the Resort’s championship golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones II, and enjoy breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Caribbean. The Tee Off for Turtles Charity Golf Challenge will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at 10 a.m. Guests who would like to join the Sea Turtle Conservancy in the Tee Off for Turtles Charity Golf Challenge should register with the Resort’s Pro Shop at ProShop.Nev@fourseasons.com; call the Resort at +1 (869) 469-1111 and ask for the Pro Shop; or dial extension 54 throughout the Resort.

We are very happy to host Tee Off for Turtles at Four Seasons Resort Nevis, said Mac Kee France, Director of Recreation for the Resort.Tee Off for Turtles is another way that we can help support great non-profit research organizations such as the Sea Turtle Conservancy preserve this wonderful animal. Sea turtles are not only an important part of the Caribbean ecosystem, but also helps attract eco-tourists to our region.

As part of the charity golf challenge, players will also receive a t-shirt, which incorporates the winning art design to commemorate the 10th annual conservation event. The design was created by Christine Matha, a librarian at Edison Elementary School in Erie’s Public Schools. Mrs. Matha is also an artist and her design was chosen by a panel of judges from the Sea Turtle Conservancy, Nevis Tourism Authority, and Four Seasons Resort Nevis. Her design earned her a three-night complimentary stay at the Resort and the opportunity to join in the entire weekend’s program.

For turtles and Four Seasons fans who simply cannot make it to Nevis for the island’s 10th annual event, Four Seasons Resort Nevis will Periscope the weekend’s events at @FSNevis. Join travel journalist and influencer Kara Franker, aka @KaraOnTheCoast, as she shares all the weekend’s sea turtle programming; speaks with experts and organizers; and covers the live release ceremony of two sea turtles. Virtual spectators should download the Periscope app and follow @FSNevis to avoid missing a second of the exciting weekend.

Each year, Four Seasons Resort Nevis helps researchers study the migration patterns of endangered sea turtles that nest on Nevis’ beaches. The Resort sponsors two GPS satellite transmitters annually to help the Sea Turtle Conservancy track the migration patterns of sea turtles that return to Nevis to lay their eggs. Guests will help spot nesting Sea Turtles with Four Seasons and the Sea Turtle Conservancy, under the guidance of local Nevis Turtle Group, who keeps a close watch on turtle activities and protects nesting sites throughout the season. Once a sea turtle is found and finishes nesting, the volunteer group will bring the turtle back to the Resort, where it will be fitted with a satellite transmitter and released into the sea the following morning.

To date, 17 hawksbill turtles have been released since the start of the program in 2006. The most recent Hawksbills from Nevis were named Luna and Millie, they were released in July of 2015. Following the culmination of each annual Sea Turtle Weekend at Four Seasons Resort Nevis, guests can follow the progress of the sea turtles as they travel around the region from Nevis, visit http://www.fourseasons.com/nevis/services_and_amenities/extraordinary_experiences/sea_turtle_program/.
