BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AS the world counts down the days to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Kim Collins could know if his application for exemption waiver was successful.
Collins, who in recent weeks has been embroiled in controversy over statements he made while competing on the international track and field circuit, submitted a waiver after he sustained an injury while running at a Diamond League event.
That injury saw him withdrawing from the National Trials in June, which is a prerequisite to qualify for the Games.
Public Relations Officer of the St. Kitts Nevis Amateur Athletics Association, Evris Huggins confirmed recently that the waiver was submitted but no timeframe was set by the body to decide on the request.
A source close to the Association told SKNVibes Sports that the body would be meeting today (Jul. 12) and that issue could be one of the matters up for discussion.
It is widely reported that Collins might have a longstanding grievance with the head of the National Olympic Committee, Michael Bridgewater.
The names of athletes selected to represent the Federation at the Rio Games are expected to be release shortly, but efforts to contact Bridgewater was unsuccessful.
Collins and several other athletes have attained the qualifying mark for the Games but his participation hinges on the SKNAAA’s meeting and ratification of the list by the NOC.
The Games, which is under a cloud largely due to the economic situation in Brazil and the Zika virus - with Rio being the epicentre, will kick off on August 5 with the opening ceremony and concludes on August 21.
