Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 15, 2016 (SKNIS):  The 2015-2016 Department of Sports Excellence Awards Sportswoman of the Year, Shafiqua Maloney of the Verchilds Child High School, has encouraged peers to embrace sport as a positive activity, but more importantly to find the right balance between academics and athletics.

The 17-year-old received the award on Wednesday (July 13) at a ceremony at Government House.

“Sports teaches discipline that can help you throughout your academic school year which will benefit you in the long run,” Maloney said.

In addition to receiving Sportswoman of the Year, she also earned the awards for Best High School Athletics Female and the Academic Athletics Excellence Award. The latter came as a surprise.

“I feel like I have done well academically, but to receive this award shows me how much I have achieved,” she said.

It was the achievement and the background of the student athletes that moved the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Tapley Seaton, to open the grounds of his official residence to host the awards ceremony.

“I thought that it provided an excellent opportunity to encourage young persons who are excelling in sports and to show them that we appreciate their efforts,” the Governor General said. And so when I was approached by the Sports Department, I readily agreed. There wasn’t any difficulty at all in my saying yes.”

That opportunity is likely to come around again, as the Department of Sports has announced plans to host the Sports Excellence Awards annually. It fits well with the desire of Sir Tapley to open Government House to a diverse cross-section of society in order to make everyone feel a greater sense of national pride.
