Rotary Club happy with turnout at Prostate Screen Day

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -  PROSTATE CANCER is one of the most common forms of cancer affecting men in the world and on Saturday (Jul. 14) a large number of them turned up to be tested for the life-threatening ailment at the St. Kitts Rotary Club-organized screening exercise.

The event, which was held at the Masonic Lodge, saw about 300 persons turning up, according to President of the SKRC Neil Owen.

However, that figure did not reach the non-organization’s expectations.

“The first year (2013) we had 128 guys come and get checked. The second year we had about 343 and on Saturday about 276 persons were checked. We were hoping to surpass last year’s but we are happy that we did not fall back below the numbers of the first year.”

Speaking with SKNVibes, Owen indicated that “the event went pretty well and we are pleased with the turnout and the logistics of the day”.

Even with the large turn which was below what the organizers were hoping to attract, he informed that a number of persons would not have known the results of their test because such screening takes about two weeks to be done.

“We wouldn’t have that information for another week or two, because what we did was draw the blood then it goes to the lab and the lab takes about a week and a half to do all the samples. So we wouldn’t get back the PSA results for another two weeks.”

This is one of two free screening exercises that is done throughout the year by the Rotary Club, the President noted, adding there is not necessarily need for a second since one is carried out on Nevis and the other on St. Kitts.

He stated that not often do Kittitians travel to Nevis during their screening and vice versa.

The screening process was led by Dr. Dwayne Thwaites, a certified Urologist, with assistance from Rotarians and a nursing team from Nevis, Owen told SKNVibes.
