(EMU) – St. Kitts, June 15, 2016: Following the launch of the Technical and Vocational, Education and Training (TVET) Enhancement Project, the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), conducted a two-day workshop, which was designed to familiarize stakeholders within the various Ministries, Departments and Industries about TVET’s enhancement project.
According to Mr. Kertney Thompson, Chief Executive Officer at the St. Kitts-Nevis TVET Secretariat, the workshop objectives included, enhanced institutional capacity for effective governance, the development of operational guidelines to support the training in PEP employees at AVEC, building and civil works rehabilitation works at: Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC) including various High Schools around the Federation.
Mr. Thompson also mentioned that development would not only come in the form of infrastructure. He added that the project aims to improve the standard of the assessors/teachers as well. “We also have training for assessors and verifiers so teachers can be taught how to competently assess the students in the skilled areas. Training in the area of Competency Based Educational Training (CBET), which allows teachers in the technical area to teach in a different methodology, rather the ‘stand and lecture’ that can not apply to TVET.”
Representative from the Caribbean Development Bank, Dr. Martin Baptiste commended the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis for the successful planning and implementation of this project as well as the implementation of the National Qualifications Framework, without which the workshop would not have been possible. “This project is very timely because it builds on what already has been happening here in St. Kitts and Nevis, where TVET is now part of the main educational system and the intent is to make sure that it is mainstream so persons that leave the education system; those in industries and those employed have opportunities to upgrade their skills and be able to compete for jobs in the public and private sectors but also to be involved in entrepreneurship.”
The infrastructural improvement and development which are being considered under the enhancement project will include the construction of Workshop Extension at CFBC, construction of an ICT Lab, TVET multi-purpose workshops, a classroom block at AVEC and a SMART classroom linked with the Multi-Purpose Center on Nevis. The laboratories and workshops in the secondary schools will also be upgraded.
