EARTHA WILLIAMS laid to rest

The late Eartha Williams
By: Lorna Callender
TRIBUTE from Past Students of The Girls’ High School

It was with acute sadness that the Past Students said goodbye to a vibrant member of their Association. Eartha was an active member of the Association of Past Students of the former Girls’ High School which ceased to exist when the Girls’ High School and the Grammar School were merged to become the Basseterre High School in 1967.

The strong school culture, its disciplinary standards and strivings for excellence have never been forgotten by past students and this has forged a bond among them. Each year on Founder’s Day in October, students still meet for a Thanksgiving Service and Eartha has always been an ardent member of the group. She will be dearly missed.

Indeed, the qualities that Eartha exemplified, the qualities of caring, discipline and strong work ethics made her a bright light and showed that she lived up to the motto of the Girls’ High School, which was ‘Ready to Serve’.

Each morning at Assembly, students were reminded to ‘let their light shine’, ‘to give of their best’ and that they were ‘lighted to lighten others’. Those who knew Eartha will confirm that she lived up to all of these reminders and that is why her sudden departure will leave such a void.

Past students of the Girls’ High School regretfully bade farewell to Eartha on Tuesday and send condolences to her friends and family.

During that same week, two other past students also departed. They were Cynthia Battice, formerly of MacKnight who migrated to Canada many years ago, and Myrthlyn ‘Peachee’ Sheppard-Grant of Wellington Road, who also migrated to Canada many years ago. To the families of these associates, the past students of the Girls’ High School also extend sincere condolences.
