Press Release

Georgetown, Guyana – July 20th, 2016 – Nearly 45 minutes into a discussion about the tiny country of Estonia – a country responsible for the creation of Skype, and wildly successful in rolling out their e-government programme and developing a thriving startup landscape – STEM Guyana’s first volunteer training workshop was interrupted by a power outage. As participants sat in disappointed silence, resilient local IT specialist Vidya Kissoon suggested taking the camp outdoors.

The ensuing positive response was unanimous, and the youth volunteer trainees immediately got to work lifting tables and robot kits to place them in the sunlit outdoors, where learning resumed.

Electricity was restored in less than an hour, but the young people voted to remain outside to complete their robot builds. After the builds were completed, the team moved back indoors to learn robot programming.

There, they excelled beyond the wildest expectations of workshop organizers. Organizers believe that Guyana will very soon develop expert talent in Lego Robotics programming. “We are confident that Guyana will soon host a team at the First Lego League International competition in the United States,” said Ima Christian. “Truly, we believe that Guyana is in great hands,” declared Karen Abrams, who along with her daughters Ima and Asha Christian conceived the STEM programme to propel Guyana’s youth to meet their world class potential.

The workshop, which was planned for a maximum of 15 volunteers, ended up registering and training a brilliant group of 25 volunteers between the ages of 16 and 21 years old who were excited, innovative, and focused on learning and then sharing their technology knowledge.

The robotics camps are co-sponsored by the Office of the First Lady of Guyana, and the first camp is to be held on July 21st, from 10am – 2pm at St Roses High School. For more information, contact stemguyana@gmail.com or WhatsApp 770-402-5857.
