Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 26, 2016 (SKNIS): Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, pledges his Government’s commitment to abide by the law. He was at the time speaking at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) Annual Judicial Conference on Monday, July 25.

“My Government is committed to preserving and upholding the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law,” said Prime Minister Harris. “At a time when the world appears to be in complete turmoil, and the rules of law and order have somehow lost their impact on the ordinary man on the street, the critical importance of the role of our judges and other persons who have dedicated their lives to upholding the law and administering justice cannot be emphasized enough.”

Dr. Harris noted that it is “necessary for persons to have the comfort in knowing that they have some recourse if they feel that their rights have been affected.”

“This is an essential component in the functioning of any civil society,” said Dr. Harris. “Without our judges who are charged with the responsibility of lending an impartial ear to the complaints and grievances that come before them every day, our stable societies and economies in this sub-region may fail to exist. There can be no functioning democracy without a strong, competent and independent judiciary.”

The Prime Minister used the occasion to commend the judicial branch of Government for its diligence and dedication to excellence. He described its work as hard and of extreme importance and noted that through this, the judicial system helps to keep not only the wider society, but also the rest of government accountable.

The Judicial Conference is ECSC’s signature event. It aims to provide a minimum of five days of judicial training every year. During the conference, three main areas will be looked at. These include competition law, civil procedure and information technology.

The Conference, which is expected to come to a close on Friday, July 28, is attended by Members of the Judicial Education Institute (JEI) of the ECSC.
