BVI, 26 July 2016 - The Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding drivers and front seat passengers to wear their seat belts at all times while the vehicle is in motion.
The Road Traffic Seat Belt and Cellular Telephone Regulations states that drivers and passengers are required to wear seatbelts at all times. Drivers found in contravention of the law are liable to pay a penalty of $100 for driving without a seat belt. If the front seat passenger is not wearing a seatbelt a fine of $100 would be imposed on both passenger and driver.
Commissioner for the Department of Motor Vehicles, Mr. Kye Rymer said that drivers and front seat passengers are becoming very complacent, and are not fastening their seat belts.
Mr. Rymer further stated, “Sometimes a front seat passenger in the vehicle may forget to put on their seatbelt. The driver's duty is to ensure that they wear their seat belt, because you are now responsible for their safety."
Adults who do not buckle up are sending a dangerous message to young persons that it is ok not to wear a seat belt, he added.
The Commissioner advised the community to always buckle up before the vehicle goes into motion. “In driving school you are taught to buckle up before driving off. Even if you are just driving a couple of yards down the road, be mindful that anything can happen between the time you begin your journey and arrival at your destination. Please adhere to the safety requirements of the Law which are for your benefit and protection," Mr. Rymer said.
Motorists are also encouraged to invest in hands-free devices to avoid accidents which may be caused due to distraction. Also, refrain from texting and driving. It can wait!
