Commissioner Queeley says the process of Police transfers is most transparent ever seen

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ian Queeley
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 27, 2016 (SKNIS): Commissioner of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), Mr. Ian Queeley, has reported to the nation that the process of police transfers is the most transparent that he has ever seen in his thirty-three (33) years as a member of the RSCNPF.

Commissioner Queeley ascended to the top cop position within the High Command of the RSCNPF in 2016 under the Government of National Unity.

Responding to a WINN FM reporter at the Prime Minister’s Press Conference on July 27 about the most recent string of police transfers, the top cop dispelled rumours of political interference in the transfers and said that he was “very disappointed to be hearing those things.”

“I’ve been a member of the Police Force for the last 33 years; since 2010, I’ve been a member of the High Command. I cannot recall in recent times that there has ever been a process in transfers as transparent as now,” Commissioner Queeley said.

“What I can say (is that) the five commissioners sat with the Force’s personnel officer, reviewed the divisions, departments, and in discussion with department heads in various instances determined where persons should be best placed, so we think that it is important for persons to be rotated in and out of different places to be rounded as police officers—and so that gave effect to this string of transfers that was made,” he added. “Going forward, that would be the standard when we are making transfers—a process of discussions and involvement—so contrary to what I have been hearing, it is the furthest from the truth.”

Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, applauded Commissioner Queeley for being candid and emphasized the Government’s position with respect to a policy of non-interference in the operations of the Police.

“We have said basically that we will let those involved in the Police make these decisions in relation to the operations, so I’m glad that the system is working and that it is transparent,” Prime Minister Harris said.
