In Honor of His Excellency Sir Garfield Auburn Sobers

Sir Garfield Auburn Sobers
By: Victor Emmanuel Eddy

Sir Garfield Auburn Sobers will commemorate his eightieth (80th) birthday today, the 28th day of July, 2016.

In 1958, at Sabina Park in Jamaica, Pakistan vs. the West Indies, he scored 365 not out, which were the highest runs scored by a batsman in Test Cricket. Test Cricket is the examination and he did it with distinction and great strides. Sir Garfield is the greatest cricketer this renowned game has known.

I came to this conclusion not by statistics. My decision was made based on his skill and ability with the new ball as a left arm orthodox spinner, not to forget a leg break and googly bowler.

Sir Garfield was the best forward short leg fieldsman and, as a batsman, a super magnificent timer with placement of strokes on both sides of the wicket. The exceptional talent comes in every sport.

I refer to his Excellency as a born genius, impenetrable and magical. It was the cricket broadcaster and journalist, John Arlott who characterized Sobers as the greatest cricketer to wear flannels. His collar was so stiff that the breeze which blew across cricket grounds on which he played was not strong enough to lower it to his shoulders.

I pray that our Father God continues to bless his Excellency Sir Garfield Sobers as he continues to share his ideas and thoughts with those who are willing to learn, which will lead them to great heights.

Happy Birthday to you Sir Garfield. We will join you in celebration of your eightieth (80th) birthday and may the good Lord bless and keep you. I salute you as the greatest.
