BASSETERRE (28th July, 2016): St. Kitts’ hosting of the first Barmy Army and CPL Golf and Cricket Week this July has highlighted the island’s ambition to make golf a major part of its tourism strategy.  Dates have already been set for the next Barmy Army tournament to be hosted in February 2017, as England take on the West Indies in a series of warm-up matches and three ODIs.

The inaugural Barmy Army Golf and Cricket Week, which took place from July 2 to 6, 2016, broke new ground as the first ever joint Golf and Cricket event to promote Golf to the UK market targeting Barmy Army members.

Testament to the strength of this first event was the partnership between the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and the Barmy Army Organisation to ensure members could enjoy their love of both Sports at the same time.

Chief Executive Officer of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Racquel Brown, said the tournament offers a tremendous platform for the promotion of St. Kitts as a prestigious golf destination.

"The initiative has introduced the island to a new audience of UK sports travellers while the Barmy Army Trophy has indeed signalled a landmark moment for St. Kitts golf following the launch of the initiative in September, 2015.  It goes without saying that we hope to see even bigger numbers in February encouraged by the UK winter,” CEO Brown said.

The inaugural Barmy Army Golf and Cricket Week kicked off with the raising of the Barmy Army Flag which became a familiar sight on The Strip where Boozies on the Beach became the temporary home of the official Barmy Army bar.

Day One saw the first Golf & Cricket Match at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club matching Barmy Army guests and CPL cricketers in a friendly challenge match followed on Day Two by the inaugural Barmy Army Trophy, won on count back by ‘Surrey Mark’ Jacob a founder Barmy Army member.

As part of the Week, Barmy Army members watched the exciting matches of the CPL T20 games and enjoyed the hospitality of the island. The St. Kitts Tourism Authority and Barmy Army Project Team appreciate the hospitality provided by the CPL organisers and partners including Royal St. Kitts Hotel, the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club, YU Lounge, Boozies on the Beach and Aqua Ballahoo.
