Public free to resume Island Purified Water consumption…Acting CMO

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Newton Ground plant of Island Purified Water is expected to resume operations having passed “all the necessary tests for compliance to the required sanitary quality of the water produced for bottling”, the St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards informs.

Last Saturday (Jul. 23) the Bureau issued an urgent advisory recalling Island Purified Water products bottled and distributed within the two weeks prior to that date.

It indicated that samples did not pass the requisite tests and acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Cameron Wilkinson told SKNVibes that elevated levels of coliform bacteria were found therein.

In another advisory released today (Jul. 28), the Bureau indicated that the Newton Ground Branch of Island Purified Water is now free to resume its operations.

“The St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards in an update to its Public Advisory sent on July 23, 2016 wishes to inform the general public that corrective measures were swiftly taken at the Island Purified Water production plant at the Newton Ground Location. The corrective measures included, among other things, halting production and disinfecting bottling lines and tanks.

“Following the conclusion of these measures, the St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards conducted a series of testing and analysis to determine and establish the sanitary quality of the water produced for bottling.”

The advisory indicated that the Island Purified Water samples went through “several rounds of analyses”

“In this regard, the approved test results have been shared with the Department of Environmental Health, who have advised Island Purified Water that commercial production of bottled water can resume at their plant with distribution activities to follow thereafter.”

The acting Chief Medical Officer told SKNVibes that the public is free to resume consumption of Island Purified Water products.

“The St. Kitts and Nevis Bureau of Standards, in collaboration with the Department of Environmental Health and the Department of Consumer Affairs, continues its mandate of protecting the environment, health and safety of consumers through routine testing of cooked/processed foods, municipal and bottled water, indoor air quality and more.”
